Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight so that she could have an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great instrument for political activism. DuVernay had a mother who was socially aware and showed her how to utilize the arts as a way to express herself. Although DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. When she was studying, DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the house of one of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
